UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi visited a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kursk, south-west Russia, on August 27. The visit took place due to the risk that the facility could be damaged during Ukraine’s incursion into the region.
The situation at the Kursk NPP is serious amid the Ukrainian military's incursion in Russia's border region, Rafael Grossi told Sputnik. He also reported that he saw some heat traces when he visited Russia’s Kursk NPP, which indicates that there was some military action there.

"It's serious in the sense that there was, and there still is, a military incursion, and this military incursion has reached a point which is not so far from the NPP, which means that there is a latent situation there," Grossi said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The agency is on alert and is hopeful that military actions close to the Kursk NPP will not happen again.

"When I visited, I saw some traces of heat impacts on the plant, which means that there was some military action there. So I hope this is not going to be repeated, but we are on alert," he added.

Moreover, he said that the situation at Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains tense.
"The situation continues to be tense. My experts continue to report about military action close to the plant," Grossi said. "We are evaluating the effects of the fire on a cooling tower of the nuclear power plant back in August. So a lot of work."
