Speaking to Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 10th meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Astronomy in Kazan, Russia, Takalani Nemaungani, Chief Director of the Astronomy Portfolio at the South African Department of Science and Innovation, highlighted the leading role his country, as the secretariat of the working group, is playing in promoting international cooperation and technological advancement in the field of astronomy.He also noted that the BRICS cooperation in astronomy includes facilitating student and scientist exchanges, promoting joint research initiatives, and sharing technological advancements.The official highlighted the successful collaboration between South Africa and Russia, with South Africa hosting Russian instruments and telescopes in the Northern Cape, facilitating knowledge sharing and technological transfer.According to him, this collaboration is further strengthened through the "BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network" project, which aims to connect existing telescopes across BRICS countries, enabling joint observation of astronomical phenomena.

On September 9-13, the Kazan Federal University, Kazan, Russia, is hosting the international scientific conference "The BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network" and the 10th meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Astronomy. The event brought together officials and experts from all 10 BRICS members.

Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 10th meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Astronomy in Kazan, Russia,
Takalani Nemaungani, Chief Director of the Astronomy Portfolio at the South African Department of Science and Innovation, highlighted the leading role his country, as the secretariat of the working group, is playing in promoting international
cooperation and technological advancement in the field of astronomy.
"All these countries have a long history of doing work in this field. But we believe that collaborations can take us to a higher level," Nemaungani said, emphasizing the importance of building strong partnerships and exchange programs among BRICS nations.
He also noted that the
BRICS cooperation in astronomy includes facilitating student and scientist exchanges, promoting joint research initiatives, and sharing technological advancements.
The official highlighted the successful collaboration between South Africa and Russia, with South Africa hosting Russian instruments and telescopes in the Northern Cape, facilitating knowledge sharing and technological transfer.
According to him, this collaboration is further
strengthened through the "BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network" project, which aims to connect existing telescopes across BRICS countries, enabling joint observation of astronomical phenomena.
"So that is an ongoing effort to align and to synchronize our various telescopes so that they can sometimes operate as one or be directed together towards a particular part of the sky where we have joint interest in observing that particular phenomena," Nemaungani explained.
