China Hopes to Strengthen Strategic Ties With BRICS Member States, Says Foreign Ministry

BEIJING (Sputnik) - The economic bloc of the world's leading emerging economies was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, five new countries, namely Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia, became full members of BRICS.
China hopes to strengthen its strategic partnership with BRICS member states to give a new impetus to cooperation, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.
"China hopes to strengthen strategic partnership with its BRICS partners, to enrich cooperation in politics and security within the bloc, to give a new impetus to cooperation within BRICS," she told a daily news briefing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the 14th meeting of BRICS high-ranking officials responsible for security matters in the Russian city of St. Petersburg from September 11-12.

Mao Ning said it would be the first such meeting following BRICS' historic enlargement. On January 1, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has not formalized its participation but has been taking part in BRICS meetings.

"The world is in chaos. Various security challenges are complex and serious. The BRICS group, which is an important platform for cooperation among developing markets and countries, has always been committed to the protection of world peace, fostering of common development, multilateralism and progress," she added.

Russia is holding the rotating presidency of BRICS. It will culminate in the BRICS leaders' summit, to be hosted by Kazan from October 23-24.
