The US, followed by the United Kingdom and the European Union, imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe after the start of the land reform, through which the black majority of the country reclaimed lands seized by British colonizers.
Zimbabwe, Russia, and Iran should work together to combat the illegal sanctions imposed by the West, said Martin Zharare, Executive Director of the Zimbabwean non-governmental organization "Citizens Against Economic Sanctions," speaking at a press conference in Harare.

"Ordinary citizens of our country are uniting to protect the unity and sovereignty of our homeland," Zharare said. "We demand the immediate lifting of these sanctions without any preconditions. The United States imposes endless sanctions on Russia, which is fighting for its rights. Washington pursues the same policy towards Iran, which seeks to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, such as generating electricity. Our countries need to join forces to achieve the removal of these sanctions."

Zharare indicated that Zimbabwe requires nuclear energy due to electricity shortages and alleged sabotage of its energy systems by Western countries. He expressed certainty that if Zimbabwe announced plans to build a nuclear power plant, the United States would likely initiate a war against them.

Sanctions Will Not Stop Scientific Progress, Including in Nuclear Field, Zimbabwean Minister Says
He criticized the US for purportedly protecting human rights, arguing that it is actually the main violator, particularly of the right to secure energy. Zharare further said that the West seeks to destabilize African nations and revert them to colonial status.
"In March of this year, the United States announced that it had allegedly abandoned sanctions, but this was a lie designed to mislead the international community," continued the NGO executive director. "Eleven high-ranking Zimbabwean officials, including president Emmerson Mnangagwa, were groundlessly accused of human rights violations and corruption. Official Washington tried to assure that restrictions against Zimbabwe were lifted, but the restrictions remained against the country's leadership. How can you separate the country from its leadership?"
According to Zharare, due to the sanctions, Zimbabwe is unable to receive development loans from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other Bretton Woods institutions. As a result, the country cannot allocate necessary funds for road repairs, purchasing medicines, medical equipment, and other urgent needs.

"This affects all of us, so these are sanctions against all Zimbabweans," he stressed. "The US and the UK are not friends of Zimbabweans; they are waging war against us."
