Palestine Working on Agreements on Unified Governance in West Bank, Gaza, Top Official Says
10:05 29.08.2024 (Updated: 11:57 29.08.2024) CAIRO (Sputnik) - The Palestinian National Authority is making efforts to reach an agreement on unified governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Varsen Aghabekian Shahin told Sputnik.
"The Palestinian leadership continues to make great efforts to unite the Palestinian ranks and agree on a national roadmap for a single and unified governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip," Aghabekian Shahin said.
Earlier in August, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told
Sputnik that the Gaza Strip should return to the control of the "legitimate
Palestinian government."
Moreover, Palestine, together with the World Bank, the United Nations, and the European Union, is developing a large-scale plan to restore the economy of the Gaza Strip, Shahin said, adding that the Palestinian government prepared a plan to revive the Gaza Strip in all areas.
Palestine is calling on the international community
to put pressure on Israel so that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas can visit the Gaza Strip, he noted.
Last week, the Walla news portal reported that the Palestinian National Authority
had asked the Israeli authorities for permission for Abbas to visit Gaza in the near future. Later, Abbas' adviser on international relations and his special envoy, Riyad al-Maliki, told
Sputnik that Israel had denied the Palestinian leader permission to visit the enclave.
"We will act to ensure President Mahmoud Abbas' visit to the Gaza Strip. A Palestinian commission has been formed to work and organize this visit to the Gaza Strip. We ask the international community to put pressure on Israel to ensure President Abbas' visit," Aghabekian Shahin said.
He added that the Palestinian Authority informed all its ambassadors and representatives of the need for action in all countries and at all levels to mobilize international support for this initiative.
