UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - According to a joint letter reviewed by Sputnik, the permanent missions of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to the United Nations have urged the UNSC to take action against Ukraine for its support of terrorism in the Sahel region.
The United Nations has not yet received a letter from the Sahel Alliance urging action against Ukraine for supporting terrorism. However, it will share the letter with the UN Security Council when it receives it, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday.
"The letter has not yet been received; will be shared with the Security Council members as needed. Our message is one of encouraging everyone to work toward the stability of the Sahel region, which is something we have been very actively involved in," Dujarric said during a press briefing.
Dujarric made the comment in response to a reporter's question regarding a joint letter sent on Tuesday by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger calling on the UN Security Council to take measures against Ukraine for its support of terrorism in the Sahel region.
On August 6, Niger cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine due to Kiev's aggression against Mali. The Malian interim government said that it had cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine as well.
Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the fact that Ukraine was cooperating with terrorists from the Sahel region was not surprising, and Moscow actively drew the attention of the international community to such actions by Kiev.
