A section of the landfill collapsed on Saturday morning, the Monitor outlet reported. The search-and-rescue operation continues. Kampala Capital City Authority spokesman Daniel Nuwe Abine said that there were 14 people injured, as they were rescued from under the garbage mound and delivered to Mulago National Referral Hospital to receive necessary treatment. Some have already been discharged from the hospital.Residents, police, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have joined forces in a bid to find survivors or recover the bodies of the victims. In January, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago reportedly warned of the possibility of the landfill collapsing.
