Africa is facing a critical shortage that is affecting millions of lives across the continent. As rivers dry up, lakes shrink, and droughts intensify, about one in three Africans struggles with inadequate access to clean water. The situation is particularly dire in sub-Saharan Africa, where some 400 million people lack basic drinking water.
Moscow offers Africa advanced technologies to solve water problems; agreements have been reached with a number of countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said at the G20 ministerial meeting.
"Russia has confirmed its readiness to supply affordable modern equipment, share developments and experience in finding and exploiting water deposits, improving the quality of water supply and rational use of water," Pankin said.
According to him, Moscow offers "competitive purification and water-saving technologies, know-how in the field of irrigation in agriculture, introduction of crops that give high yields with less water consumption."
"We have a tradition of close cooperation with our Central Asian neighbors. The BRICS Clean Rivers program, proposed by Russia and aimed at improving rivers and preventing pollution of water resources in the countries of the association, is being successfully implemented," the deputy minister said.
