19:35 22.07.2024 (Updated: 19:59 22.07.2024) The inaugural Africa Military Games' event was hosted by Kenya in April 2002, with 32 countries in attendance, over 1,562 athletes, and 11 sports events under the auspices of the International Military Sports Council and the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA).
The second Africa Military Games, themed
"Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa Through Sport," with the aim of fostering good relationships and cooperation among African nations, were
announced by the Director of Sports at the Defense Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, on Friday.
Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso joined the event, despite their recent
exit from ECOWAS, after the regional bloc sanctioned these countries following military coups.
The games will run from November 5 to 18 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, and will feature 19 sports, including football, boxing, and judo.
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu will be the grand patron, with Minister of Defense Mohammed Badaru and General Christopher Musa as key hosts.
“So for Nigeria, while hosting these games, it's going to increase tolerance to our country.[…] Nigeria will be visible. When tourists come to your country, they are coming to spend money on accommodation, food, transportation, souvenirs and other goods and services. So hosting these games is a positive force multiplier with respect to economic growth,” Marquis said during the press briefing.
Significant infrastructure developments, such as new hotels, are expected as well.
Sporting activities, especially by military personnel, would help countries understand their operations better and foster peace on the continent, the president of OSMA, Major General Maikano Abdullahi, highlighted during the press briefing.
"This is a unique event because it involves the armed forces of Africa. And by implication, some of our friends from Russia, Germany, the US are also coming as invited athletes," he said.
Despite ongoing
conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the Sudanese military is expected to join the event.
