WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Last July, former US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that if Trump is reelected as US president, he could pull the US troops out of NATO, Korea or Japan and weaken ties with Taiwan.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has vowed to get along with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if elected next US president in November, adding that Kim misses him.

"I got along very well with North Korea, Kim Jong Un, I got along very well with him… you know, it's nice to get along with somebody who has a lot of nuclear weapons or otherwise," Trump told the 2024 Republican National Convention on Thursday night. "I got along with him, and we stopped the missile launches from North Korea. Now, North Korea is acting up again, but when we get back, I’ll get along with him. He'd like to see me back too. I think he misses me. If you want to know the truth."

In 2018, Trump and the North Korean leader signed a joint agreement to de-escalate relations between the United States and North Korea. The two leaders met the following year in Vietnam's Hanoi to continue the negotiations but failed to reach a deal on the issue of US sanctions against North Korea.
The relations between the two countries have since remained tense.
