The Russian president's state visits to long-standing allies underscore Moscow's efforts to bolster its strategic partnerships with its Asian neighbors. These visits highlight the necessity of diplomacy, mutual respect, and shifting from a hegemonic unipolar system to a multipolar world order.
President Putin's trips to Pyongyang and Hanoi on June 18 and 19, respectively, reinforce Russia's image as a trusted partner. These visits came on the heels of his proposal on June 14, outlining concrete conditions for Kiev to adopt a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status and withdraw Ukrainian soldiers from Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye, for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Dr. Alexander Rusero, a senior lecturer of International Relations, Politics, and Journalism and head of the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Africa University, Mutare, Zimbabwe, discusses the implications of Putin’s speech with Sputnik Africa.

"There is a need to emphasize, there is a need to recalibrate what Russia declared as early as 2014. This is still a condition that is ten years now. It's not like it's something new that President Putin is throwing into the fray. These plans have been known since 2014, so there's a need to invest in some degree of consideration concerning the criticality of Donbass and Novorossiya to Russia. These are historical issues," Dr. Rusero notes.
