Niger is one of the Sahel countries affected by a radical Islamist insurgency. Along with Burkina Faso and Mali, the nation founded the military Alliance of Sahel States in September 2023 to address common issues, primarily security. The organization was upgraded to a confederation on July 6, 2024.
On July 17, Nigerien capital Niamey hosted a Turkish delegation led by the head of Turkish diplomacy.
"We discussed what can be done to improve the defense industry and intelligence capabilities in Niger as part of the fight against terrorism, which is the main source of instability in the Sahel region," Minister Hakan Fidan said after meeting with Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine.
