Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer. Meanwhile, Russia, one of the world's largest wheat and grain producers, is the main supplier of wheat to the North African country.
Egypt has agreed to purchase 720,000 tonnes of wheat from Russia, local news portal Vetogate reported, citing a statement by the Egyptian General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC).
It is noted that the GASC has signed contracts to purchase 770,000 tonnes of
grain from Russia and Bulgaria.
"This amount includes 720,000 tonnes of Russian wheat and 50,000 tonnes of Bulgarian wheat," the statement said.
According to several media outlets, this is the
largest wheat purchase for Egypt in terms of volume over the past two years.
Earlier, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture reported that Russia exported more than 3.5 million tonnes of
wheat to Egypt in the first four months of 2024, up 20% year-on-year.
