Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop told Sputnik in late June that Russia is rapidly improving Mali's military capabilities, and they are discussing the procurement of military equipment. Key interaction areas also include solar and nuclear energy, along with fuel and fertilizer supplies to Mali.
The Russians are known for their ability to achieve desired outcomes rather than simply providing instructions. That is why Mali should intensify its contacts with the country, Tchiroma Aissami, a member of the Network of Organizations for Transparency and Budget Analysis, told Sputnik Africa.
“I think it’s really a cooperation that needs to be strengthened. Because the Russians have results. They don't make too much noise, but on the ground, they really have results. […] You define your priorities. Now Russia supports you in achieving your priorities, in achieving your goals,” he said.
The analyst added that Russia's decision to pursue a multipolar world has been acknowledged, leading to cooperative efforts with
Niger, which is seen as having made the best choice. Despite some lingering insecurity and minor attacks on the ground, the overall assessment is that Niger's decision was wise.
“You're never going to see Russia's hand behind the terrorists anyway. […] But everyone saw the connection between NATO powers and the terrorists,” Aissami concluded.
