Fighting Torture: African Experts Call for Protection of Those Most at Risk
13:42 01.07.2024 (Updated: 18:51 01.07.2024) The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture has been observed annually on June 26 since it was established by the UN General Assembly on December 12, 1997.
On the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture last week, Sputnk Africa discussed the issue with two experts.
"Torture is often perpetrated on the most vulnerable members of society for several reasons – rooted in power dynamics, discrimination, and systematic failures," Torkwase Kate Yaji, a Nigerian anti-trafficking specialist and community engagement expert, said.
He called for increased community engagement that "plays a crucial role in preventing torture and supporting victims by fostering a supportive environment, promoting human rights awareness, and advocacy for
accountability."
"On the one side, a strong legal framework that prohibits torture and ill-treatment, and reflects international standards [is necessary]. And implementing, on the other side, is fundamental," Dr. Cristiano d'Orsi, lecturer and senior research fellow at the South African Research Chair in International Law, said.
