With the BRICS Games taking place in the Russian city of Kazan, Sputnik Africa talked to Emilia Tangara, a Russian track and field athlete with Malian roots, about the event.
She noted that the Games truly embodied the spirit of celebration, saying that upon arrival in the village, the athletes were welcomed with songs and dances. She appreciated the variety of events that were prepared to make the Games feel like a festival. Tangara added that the viewers were very supportive and cheerful.
The athlete also said that politicizing sports is “unfair.”

“Well, of course it's unfair. I don’t even know what else I can say. I personally don’t understand all this [politicizing],” she said.
