On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the capital of Burkina Faso on his first visit to the country. Previously, the minister visited Guinea and the Republic of the Congo. The visit to Burkina Faso took place against the backdrop of expanding cooperation between this Sahel country and Russia.
Russia and Burkina Faso are developing equal cooperation in the military sphere as well as in the economy, health care, and other areas, Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a press conference with his Burkinabé counterpart Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré in Ouagadougou.
"With the arrival of President [Ibrahim] Traoré, we were able to fully develop and continue to develop the potential of mutually beneficial equal cooperation in a wide range of areas, including the economy, social sphere, healthcare, education, military and military-technical cooperation," Lavrov said.
Lavrov separately noted that Russia's relations with Burkina Faso had received "a new, strong, positive impetus" after Burkina Faso's President Traoré came to power.
The Russian diplomat added that Moscow will additionally supply Burkina Faso with military products to strengthen the country's defense capability as part of its ongoing fight against terrorism.
"Of course, we are developing military-technical cooperation, we supply and will supply additional military products that are necessary to strengthen the defense capability of Burkina Faso and the possibility of suppressing the remnants of terrorist groups," Lavrov told reporters.
He also revealed that Russia also plans to increase the number of military instructions in the West African country.
Burkina Faso's energy minister is expected to hold talks with Russia's ROSATOM corporation on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which is being held in Russia June 5-8, to discuss cooperation in the nuclear sector, Lavrov said.
