In December 2023, Nigerien authorities announced the termination of the EU Capacity-Building (EUCAP) Sahel Niger and the EU Military Partnership Mission in Niger (EUMPM). This came as part of the authorities' review of all military agreements signed by the government of President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown by the army in July 2023.
The European Council announced on Monday that it had decided not to extend its Military Partnership Mission in Niger (EUMPM) in Niger beyond 30 June, 2024.

"The Council today decided to not extend the European Union military partnership mission in Niger (EUMPM) beyond 30 June, 2024, in view of the grave current political situation in the country," the EU Council said in a statement.

The EUMPM contingent, which was established in 2022 at the request of the former Nigerien authorities, consists of between 50 and 100 soldiers and is responsible for providing logistical and infrastructural support to the West African country's army.

It's worth noting that the United States began withdrawing its troops from Niger's territory in March after Niamey terminated its military agreement with Washington.
On May 19, the two nations agreed that the withdrawal of American soldiers from Niger would be completed by September 15 at the latest.
Previously, Niger's military rulers had pressured former colonial power France to withdraw its military forces from the country.
