MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a phone conversation with First Vice President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber, who is currently the acting head of state following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, the Kremlin said on Monday.
"Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with the acting head of the executive branch of Iran, Mohammad Mokhber," the Kremlin said in a statement.
Both sides emphasized their mutual commitment to further consistent strengthening of comprehensive Russian-Iranian interaction for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries, the statement read.
"Mohammad Mokhber expressed sincere gratitude for the words of sympathy and support in this difficult time for the country," the Kremlin said, adding that during the talks, Putin expressed his deepest condolences to the leaders and people of Iran in connection with the death of Raisi.
Earlier in the day, Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri confirmed media reports that Raisi and his delegation, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, died in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. According to the national law, Mokhber will serve as head of state for the next 50 days until a new presidential election is held by a special council.
