MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Friday, South Africa filed an urgent request with the ICJ for additional measures against Tel Aviv over the situation in the Gazan town of Rafah, where Israeli troops launched a military operation on Monday.
The UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced on Tuesday that it will hold hearings on May 16-17 on
South Africa's request for measures against Israel over the situation Rafah.
"On Thursday 16 May and Friday 17 May 2024, the International Court of Justice will hold public hearings at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, on the request filed by South Africa on 10 May 2024 for the indication of additional provisional measures and the modification of provisional measures previously prescribed by the Court in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel)," the statement said.
South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel with the ICJ on December 29 last year. In its application, South Africa alleged that Israel was committing acts of genocide against Palestine.
On Sunday, Egypt announced that it would join South Africa's genocide case against Israel to press and hold the Jewish state accountable for the deaths of more than
35,000 Palestinian civilians, most of whom were children and women, according to Gazan authorities.
