On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a complaint against Israel with the International Court of Justice in The Hague, alleging that the Jewish state is involved in "acts of genocide" against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
Turkey has made a formal decision to join South Africa's lawsuit against Israel at the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ), Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a joint news conference with his Indonesian counterpart.

"I would like to announce it for the first time that we have decided to join South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice," Fidan said.

The top diplomat added that after completing the legal text of the work, Ankara will submit a declaration of formal intervention to the ICJ in order to implement the political decision.
"Turkey will continue to support the Palestinian people in all circumstances," he pointed out.
Turkey will thus join Colombia in formally requesting to join the case against Israel. Last month, the South American country called on the ICJ to allow it to join the case and to ensure "the safety and, indeed, the very existence of the Palestinian people."

Which Countries Supported South Africa's Genocide Case Against Israel?
The ICJ issued an interim ruling on January 26 on South Africa's request for provisional measures against Israel for alleged genocide in Gaza.
The court obligated Israel to take all measures to prevent genocide in Gaza, to punish incitement to genocide against Palestinians, to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the residents of the area, and to ensure the preservation of evidence related to allegations of acts against the Palestinian people described in the Genocide Convention. However, the UN court did not order Israel to stop its military operation in Gaza, as South Africa had requested in its complaint.
As the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorated, a UN court on March 28 ordered Israel to take all necessary measures to ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid, including water and food, into Gaza and to ensure that Israeli forces do not commit acts that violate the rights of Palestinians in Gaza.
Last December, Pretoria filed a complaint against Israel at the ICJ under the Genocide Convention over the situation in Gaza, urging the court to take interim measures against the Israeli authorities. South Africa said that Israel's actions against Palestinians in Gaza are a "violation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention."
South Africa's initiative was backed by dozens of countries and international organizations, including the African Union, Algeria, Egypt, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Brazil.
