Dakar's Desire to Revise EU Treaties is Perfectly Legitimate: Head of African Diplomatic Academy
In his election manifesto, the Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye promised to renegotiate fisheries agreements and oil and gas contracts with the EU. He raised the issue during his meeting with the President of the European Council in Dakar.
The revision of treaties with the EU advocated by
Dakar is perfectly legitimate,
the president of the African Diplomatic Academy, Benoît Ngom, said.
"The African party has not been considered as an equal. Most of the contracts signed between African countries and Western partners, and perhaps with other countries as well, have often been unfair contracts," he told Sputnik Africa.
That is why the countries of the continent have not been able to reap the benefits of these agreements, he added.
According to Ngom,
Diomaye's position "is part of a new African approach to international relations, based on respect, consideration and equality between the various parties."
