Germany acknowledges the West's geostrategic lag behind Russia in Africa, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stressed.The African region remains strategically important despite, and perhaps exactly because of, the Russian presence, he added.In recent years, the West has been facing the decline of its influence on the continent. For instance, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali have achieved the withdrawal of French troops off their soil. Recently, Niger broke the military agreement with the United States. Chad has also threatened the US to cancel an agreement regarding the US' military presence in the African country.Meanwhile, Russia is actively strengthening its cooperation with the Sahelian nations. Last week, Russian military instructors arrived in Niger to train the country's military personnel in counterterrorism. In August 2023, Russia's deputy defense minister met alternately with the Burkinabe and Malian leaders to discuss reinforcing the defense and military cooperation, as well as the security situation in the Sahel region.
