MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has decided how to respond to Saturday's retaliatory strike on Israel by Iran but has not yet decided on the timing of the response, The Jerusalem Post has reported, citing multiple sources.
Sources told the newspaper on Tuesday that the IDF's decision could change as timing is still variable and because of all the necessary complex preparations.
Nevertheless, the development of a decision to respond to Iran's strike shows the determination of Israel’s leadership to respond to it, the report said, adding, however, that all indications are that the Jewish state still seeks to avoid striking back to escape an escalation of a regional war.
On Saturday night, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched over 300 drones and missiles at Israel in its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory, the IDF said. The attack came in response to Israel's airstrike on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital in early April. IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel had intercepted 99% of the aerial targets fired by Iran, including all drones.
Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz said on Sunday that the government would build a regional coalition to confront Iran. He said Israel's retaliation to Iran's air attack would be "in the fashion and timing of our choice."
