Guterres Warns UNSC Against Actions That Could Unleash Larger Conflict in Middle East

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - Last Saturday night, Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles toward Israel after threatening to retaliate for a deadly airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Syria a week before that killed seven members of the elite Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Following the escalation between Iran and Israel, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that it was vital to avoid any type of escalation which could lead to big confrontations in the Middle East.
"It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East," Guterres said in the UN Security Council chamber to the members.
Furthermore, Guterres urged states on Sunday to avoid any use of force against other states.
"I remind all Member States that the Charter of the United Nations prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations," Guterres said in the Council chamber to the members.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel last Saturday night, marking the group's first-ever direct assault on Israeli territory.
The Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1 prompted the Iranian attack. According to the Israel Defense Forces, Israel shot down all of Iran's assault drones and intercepted 99% of the country's aerial targets.
Israel will retaliate against Iran's attack, but the scale of its response is not yet determined, the US media reported last Sunday, citing an unnamed Israeli official.
