QUITO (Sputnik) - Trade and commercial ties between Ecuador and Russia are rapidly expanding, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Ecuador being one of Russia's top trading partners in Latin America.
Russia is ready to export wheat to Ecuador and has made a relevant proposal to the Latin American country's agriculture minister during a recent meeting, Russian Ambassador to Ecuador Vladimir Sprinchan told Sputnik.
"I told the minister that Russia is ready to export wheat. The wheat harvest in recent years is greater than during the entire existence of the Soviet Union. This [has become possible] due to new technologies, new agricultural equipment, increased investments by the government in agriculture," Sprinchan said.
Economic cooperation between the two countries continues to improve. Ecuador ranked third among all Latin American countries in terms of trade turnover with Russia by the end of 2020. In 2021, trade turnover between the countries increased by almost 29% compared to 2020 and amounted to $1.9 billion, the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision reported.
The main categories of Russian export products, accounting for more than 85% of supplies, are mineral fertilizers, chemical products, petroleum products, paper, and cardboard. Key import items include bananas (84.2%), flowers, and crustaceans.
Moreover, the two countries underlined a shared desire to accelerate commerce and foster joint projects since the current level of Russian-Ecuadorian trade does not meet the potential of the economies of the nations, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
