MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Earlier in the day, the ICJ started hearing Nicaragua's case against Germany over its alleged violation of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Nicaragua calls on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Germany to halt military assistance to Israel that can be used in violation of the Genocide Convention, Nicaragua's agent ambassador to the ICJ Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez said on Monday.
"This is the explanation of the provisional measures requested — the first request and order that Germany suspends its aid to Israel, in particular its military assistance, including military equipment … that is used or may be used in the violation of the Genocide Conversation, international humanitarian law or other imperative norms of general international law," Arguello Gomez said during the court hearing on Nicaragua's lawsuit against Germany.
Nicaragua also asked The Hague-based court to compel Germany to ensure that military weapons and equipment already delivered to Israel are not used to commit genocide or facilitate violations of the Genocide Convention and international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip, Arguello Gomez said.
"There can be no question that Germany ... was well aware, and is well aware, of at least the serious risk of genocide being committed," he said.
The Central American nation also wants the ICJ to order Germany to "resume its support and financing" of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), suspended amid allegations that some of its staff were involved in the October 7 attack on Israel.

Berlin Rejects Genocide Accusations Over Arms Supplies to Israel, Foreign Ministry States
In early March, Nicaragua filed a lawsuit against Germany with the ICJ over its alleged violation of the UN Genocide Convention. Nicaragua pointed to Germany's suspension of support for UNRWA and also providing financial, political and military assistance to Israel, while being aware that it would allegedly be used to violate international law and "facilitate genocide."
Germany has rejected the accusations and is expected to respond to them in court on Tuesday.
