'Bringing South Africa to Its Knees Would be Self-Sabotage for US,' SA's Foreign Minister Says
In early March, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor told the media that certain US lawmakers had adopted a "very negative" stance towards South Africa following its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
"Bringing South Africa to its knees would be self-sabotage for the US", South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor wrote in her article, published in the
US newspaper Financial Times.
Naledi Pandor's statement refers to a bill under consideration in the US House of Representatives to revise relations with South Africa.
According to her, the legislation claims that "the
South African government has a history of siding with malign actors" and as part of its discussion, the issue of whether South Africa "has engaged in activities that undermine US national security or foreign policy interests" will be considered.
"The bill also fails to acknowledge the right of all sovereign nations to develop and promote their own foreign policies. It criticizes us for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice, where we argued that the actions of the Israeli military in Gaza violate international law and the Geneva Convention," she wrote in her article, published in the US newspaper Financial Times.
Pandor also noted that in 2021, the United States imported nearly 100% of the chromium it needs from South Africa, as well as more than 25% of the manganese, titanium, and platinum it needs.
Some US lawmakers have taken a "
negative position" towards South Africa following its legal challenge against Israel at the International Court of Justice, the foreign minister told the media in early March.
