South Africa Regrets US Lawmakers' Intent to Review Bilateral Relations, Presidency Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On February 6, two US congressmen introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that seeks a "full review" of bilateral relations with South Africa, citing Pretoria's "building ties to countries and actors that undermine America's national security," including China, Russia and Palestinian movement Hamas.
Pretoria regrets an attempt by US lawmakers to pass a bill calling for a review of bilateral ties between the two nations, South African presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said.
"It would be most unfortunate for South Africa-US relations if this bill ever sees the light of day," Magwenya told the media in a telephone conversation.
Many of the issues raised in the bill have "either been dealt with through our own judicial processes or clarified in public communication," the spokesman added.
The South African
government maintains that despite opposing positions on a number of geopolitical issues, ties between Pretoria and Washington remain strong, the media reported. The United States is South Africa's second-largest trading partner after China.
