Nigerian Army Begins CNG Vehicle Conversion to Boost Operational Efficiency
15:25 01.04.2024 (Updated: 15:42 01.04.2024) Last August, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu approved the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to support his desire to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians by reducing electricity costs.
The Nigerian Army has trained officers to drive 15 newly converted compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, the Corps Marshal of the Corps of Supply and Transportation, Maj. Gen. Adekunle Adeyinka, was quoted by the local media as saying, adding that the move would enhance the combat effectiveness of the force.
"Eleven of our colleagues are undergoing training, comprising the Corps of Supply and Transport as well as the Corps of Mechanical Engineers. At our Lagos centre, we will equally be converting 15 vehicles and having 11 personnel [trained] during the conversion," he said.
He emphasized that the initiative is part of the broader Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, led by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at reducing dependence on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and introducing greener alternatives.
"The projects are just the first step in the long journey which the Nigerian Army has availed itself the opportunity of being assisted by the presidential initiative, to ensure that not only the operational efficiency is improved, but also that we are seen to be in compliance with all efforts to ensure that we run our business in a manner that aligns with the global environmental trends," Adeyinka said.
He added that the army would follow up to ensure that the president's initiative "sees the light of day."
Michael Oluwagbemi, the project director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative,
commended the army for taking the lead in being the first national institution to take on the task of transforming its fleet in line with the presidential Initiative, the local media added.
"Energy security being a part of the overall security of the nation must consider three parameters – availability, affordability and accessibility. In any of these three factors, gas is above PMS and diesel in the Nigerian energy need," he explained.
Last year, the Nigerian government announced plans to introduce one million CNG vehicles by 2027.
Compressed Natural Gas is a natural gas, which is produced by means of compressor units and used as a motor fuel instead of gasoline, diesel fuel and propane. It is cheaper than conventional fuels, and the greenhouse effect caused by its combustion products is less.
