Nigerian President Urges Military to Continue Protecting Country's Territorial Integrity
14:03 11.02.2024 (Updated: 14:23 11.02.2024) President's remarks came during the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA), founded in 1964, where he assured the military of his administration's commitment to their welfare.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu tasked the armed forces to continue to protect Nigeria's territorial integrity from any threat, praising them for their devotion to duty and sacrifice for the nation, the presidency said in a statement.
"I urge you to continue to play your constitutional role of safeguarding the territorial integrity of Nigeria, our fatherland," the presidency quoted Tinubu as saying. "The government is fully aware of the services and sacrifices that members of the Nigerian Armed Forces have continued to render across the length and breadth of this country, especially in the face of daunting challenges."
He also noted the "relative peace" the army has managed to secure, but warned the military that "the war is not over" and called for an intensified fight against
insecurity.
As for the Nigerian Defense Academy, Tinubu noted several milestones in its transformation, including the successful reunification of the
country after the civil war in 1967 and upgrading of the NDA from a non-degree awarding institution to a full-fledged degree awarding university in 1985.
Speaking on the current stage, the leader praised the academy as one of the best in the world and compared it to Silicon Valley in California, a hub for high-tech companies.
"The consistent academic calendar devoid of industrial disputes and strikes should make the NDA postgraduate school an institution of first choice not only for Nigerian students but also for students across the globe. I therefore charge the academic staff, both military and non-military to transform the NDA into ‘Nigeria’s Silicon Valley,’ a hub for startups where ideas are not only incubated but also actualized," the president said.
Tinubu added that the quality of military and academic training in the NDA has continued to attract clientele from other African nations.
