MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Somalia's parliament on Saturday passed amendments to the first four chapters of the constitution to bestow significantly more powers upon the president, introduce direct election and extend the term of service of the federal government, Somalian media reported on Saturday.
Somalia's president will now be able to both appoint and fire the prime minister, while the head of state themselves will be elected by the citizens in a direct vote, Garowe Online reported. Until now, the prime minister's dismissal was the parliament's remit.
The federal government will have its term extended from four to five years, the report read.
Additionally, the new constitution is establishing a three-party political system in the country, which is a provision debated particularly strongly by representatives of Somalia's opposition.
