The modern intelligence service in South Africa was established in 1994, immediately after the collapse of the apartheid system.
The South African Parliament has passed amendments to the National Strategic Intelligence Act of 1994, the Intelligence Services Act of 2002, and the Intelligence Services Oversight Act of 1994, the main element of which is the division of the national intelligence services into internal and external intelligence, local news portal Eyewitness reported.
All three of the country's main
political parties – the ruling African National Congress, the opposition Democratic Alliance, and the Economic Freedom Fighters – and their parliamentary caucuses supported the bill, the portal said.
As a result, South Africa's
intelligence services will be divided into two units, one dealing with internal issues and the other with external ones.
The amendments also establish a procedure for monitoring individuals whose actions give rise to reasonable suspicion. The system of state control over the intelligence services and the actions of their employees has been clarified.
