A mass shooting occurred on Friday evening in the Crocus City Hall concert venue in the city of Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, followed by a massive fire that caused numerous casualties - a tragedy unprecedented in recent years.
A terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow has killed at least 133 people, and officials warn that the death toll could rise significantly.
Eleven people were detained in connection with the attack, including four who were directly responsible, the Russian Federal Security Service said.
A Sputnik correspondent who witnessed the attack reported that at least three men dressed in camouflage broke into the music hall, shooting people point-blank and throwing incendiary bombs. Later, the authorities confirmed that there were four terrorists involved.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the events a "bloody and barbaric" terrorist attack and declared March 24 a national day of mourning for the victims.

Beslan School Siege, 2004
On September 1, 2004, 32 terrorists took more than 1,128 hostages, including students, their parents and teachers, at School No. 1 in Beslan, southern Russia.
The militant gang held the hostages for three excruciating days, herding most of the hostages into the school's gymnasium, which was booby-trapped.

On September 3, two powerful explosions reverberated through the school's gymnasium, triggering an unplanned raid of the school by the Russian special forces.
The terrorist attack killed a total of 334 people, including 186 children, as well as 10 special forces fighters.

On October 31, 2015, a Russian Airbus A321 airliner flying from Egypt to Russia's Pulkovo airport exploded in the skies over the Sinai Peninsula.
Daesh* militants claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian investigators identified an explosive device on board as the most likely cause of the incident.

Movsar Barayev's group of assailants declared their support for the Islamist separatist struggle in Chechnya. They called for the Second Chechen War to stop and for Russian forces to leave Chechnya, and held the audience hostage for almost three days.
After three days, and numerous attempts to negotiate, law enforcement agencies launched an assault on the building.
130 people were killed, according to official data, 119 of them died in hospitals.
Budyonnovsk Hospital Hostage Crisis, 1995
On June 14, 1995, a group of armed Chechen fighters led by Shamil Basayev abducted 1,586 residents of the city of Budyonnovsk in southern Russia, about 110 kilometers north of the border with the breakaway Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, and held them hostage in the city hospital building.
Three days after the attempted storming of the building by federal troops, negotiations began, after which the militants, along with some of the hostages, were allowed to leave Budyonnovsk.
