MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Ukrainian military conducted a major offensive last week in an effort to breach the Russian border regions of Belgorod and Kursk. The Russian military responded by launching an extensive campaign of air and ground operations to eradicate the attacking forces.
One civilian has died, another two have been injured in a drone attack in the Chernyansky Dictrict of Russia's Belgorod Region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Saturday.
"Unmanned aerial vehicles have attacked two municipalities - the Starooskolskiy District and the Chernyansky District. In the Chernyansky District, one civilian was killed and two people were injured. Early in the morning, Belgorod was shelled: private houses, apartment buildings were damaged, there are victims. The data is currently being clarified, I will definitely inform you a little later," Gladkov wrote on Telegram.
Moreover, Russian air defenses intercepted and destroyed 12 Ukrainian drones over four regions at night, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
“This night, attempts by the Kiev regime to carry out terrorist attacks on targets on the territory of the Russian Federation using aircraft-type UAVs were stopped. Air defense systems on duty intercepted and destroyed 12 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the territories of Bryansk (5 UAVs), Belgorod (5 UAVs), Voronezh (1 UAV) and Saratov (1 UAV) regions,” the ministry said.
Ukraine has been sending drones and missiles into the Russian territory almost daily since it launched a counteroffensive in early June. The UN said in August, following a botched drone strike on Moscow, that it did not want to see any targeting of civilian infrastructure.
