BELGOROD (Sputnik) - Ukraine has been sending drones and missiles into the Russian territory almost daily since it launched a counteroffensive in early June. The United Nations said in August, following a botched drone strike on Moscow, that it did not want to see any targeting of civilian infrastructure.
Eight air targets have been downed when approaching Russia's Belgorod, as a result, a car driver was killed and three more were injured, Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Thursday.
"Our air defense system worked over Belgorod and the Belgorod Region — eight air targets were shot down on approach to the city. Operational services are clarifying information about the consequences on the ground. According to preliminary data, the driver died as a result of the car being hit. The ambulance line also received a call about two injured women and one man. Ambulance crews rushed to the scene," Gladkov wrote on Telegram.
In a separate statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian air defenses intercepted and destroyed 14 Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod and Kursk regions overnight.
"During the past night, attempts by the Kiev regime to carry out terrorist attacks using aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation were stopped. Air defense systems on duty intercepted and destroyed 14 UAVs over the Belgorod region (11 UAVs) and Kursk region (3 UAVs)," the ministry said.
Governor Gladkov added that no one was injured or killed when Belgorod was attacked by the Armed Forces of Ukraine using an aircraft-type drone.
"As a result of the falling debris, a fire occurred in dry grass, which was promptly extinguished by fire crews. Windows were also broken in one private household. A door-to-door search of the area continues," Gladkov wrote on Telegram.
Since the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Russian regions have been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks.
