The concerns of security experts in the region were voiced at a high-level meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in Uganda, which aimed to introduce comprehensive legislation to counter violent extremism and terrorism in their parliaments.
Amidst escalating tensions fueled by the Gaza crisis, security agencies in East Africa have issued warnings of potential terrorist attacks targeting Israeli interests in the region, the local media said.
The experts explained that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels operating in Uganda and DR Congo and Somalia-based al-Shabaab* terrorists, have used the Gaza conflict to recruit members.

The security agents also warned that the region could face increased activity from the groups and cautioned that collaboration between the two groups has become more likely.

Dr. Tolit Atiya, a regional security expert, highlighted the concerning trend of extremist groups spreading from the Sahel region to East Africa and the Horn of Africa, noting that the region could potentially face heightened activities by the groups as a result.
The media has previously reported that the threat from Somali pirates has increased as a result of insecurity in the Red Sea due to the conflict in Gaza and the shift in focus of Western fleets there.

Founded in 1995, the ADF operates in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, where it is listed as a terrorist organization. The United Nations accuses the ADF of killing hundreds of civilians since 2014. The ADF has close ties to the Daesh terrorist group*.
The Somalia-based radical Islamist group al-Shabaab*, which has close ties to the international terrorist organization al-Qaeda*, has been waging an armed insurgency against the central government of Somalia since the mid-2000s.
