MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Last Friday, the Senegalese Constitutional Court annulled Senegal's PresSall’s decree on rescheduling the presidential election. The ruling stated that the law on the postponement of the election, adopted on February 5, contradicted the country's constitution.
Outgoing Senegalese President Macky Sall confirmed on Thursday that his term would end on April 2 but did not name a new date for the presidential election.
"On 2 April 2024 my mission at the head of Senegal comes to an end ... As far as the date is concerned, we'll see what the dialogue comes up with," Sall said during a televised press interview, as quoted by AFP.
He said the presidential election "can be held before or after April 2" but added that he did not think it would be possible before April 2.

Senegal's Constitutional Council Approves Final List of Candidates for Presidential Elections
In early February, the Senegalese parliament passed a law postponing the presidential election until December 15, 2024, as the opposition was forced out of parliament before the vote. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over the postponement and urged the authorities to set a new date for the election.
Following this, the Senegalese Constitutional Court declared last Friday that President Sall's decree to reschedule the presidential election has been annulled. The court argued that the law passed on February 5th, which allowed the election postponement, was in violation of the country's constitution.
On Monday, the Constitutional Council of Senegal released the list of 19 candidates who were allowed to run in the country's presidential election.
