Senegal's Constitutional Council Approves Final List of Candidates for Presidential Elections
10:39 21.02.2024 (Updated: 10:57 21.02.2024) Last week, Senegal's Constitutional Council overturned President Macky Sall's decree to postpone the presidential elections scheduled for the end of February.
Senegal's Constitutional Council has approved and ratified the final list of 19 candidates eligible to run in the presidential election originally scheduled for February 25.
The list of candidates remained almost unchanged, except for the withdrawal of Rose Wardini, leader of the Sénégal Nouveau movement.
Wardini, whose candidacy was hotly contested because of her alleged French citizenship, announced her intention to withdraw from
the presidential race on Tuesday, noting that she had taken the decision "in complete sovereignty and after extensive consultations."
She confirmed that she would provide the courts with "all evidence" of her exclusive Senegalese citizenship, a constitutional requirement for any presidential candidate.
"Considering, therefore, that article 34, paragraph one, of the Constitution provides: 'in the event of the withdrawal of one of the candidates between the publication of the list of candidates and the first round, the election shall continue with the other candidates participating in the election'," the Council emphasized.
In early February, Senegalese President Macky Sall revoked a decree to convene an electoral council on February 25, meaning that presidential elections will not be held on that date.
The decision sparked protests in the West African nation, which were dispersed with tear gas and reportedly led to the arrest of opposition activists.
Later, lawmakers in Senegal's parliament
voted to extend Sall's mandate for six months, until December 15.
On Thursday, the Constitutional Council
overturned a law passed by the National Assembly to postpone the presidential elections, and the new date for the elections is unknown.
