UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - In February, personnel and vehicles of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo were attacked in the capital, Kinshasa, according to the head of the mission.
Critical staff of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo have returned to the office after security incidents against UN staff, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo Bintou Keita said on Tuesday.

“In the course of one day and in Kinshasa alone, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes and MONUSCO were targeted in 11 incidents, affecting a total 32 UN Staff Members who had to either be extracted or rescued by Quick Response Teams, as well as 2 UN vehicles burnt and 8 severely damaged by stoning. Following these incidents, I decided to restrict the movement of staff and called for remote working arrangements. With the actions taken by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, these measures were gradually relaxed as of last Saturday, with critical staff returning to the office, as of yesterday,” Keita told the UN Security Council members during a briefing on the DRC.

MONUSCO is also being targeted by a wave of mis- and dis-information due to its part in the ongoing clashes, he added.
The ongoing political instability in the DRC has also dried up food production. According to the World Food Programme data, about 6.3 million people are internally displaced in the DRC, of whom nearly 6 million are within the three eastern provinces, with about 4.4 million people affected by malnutrition.
The DRC has long been facing attacks against civilians by different rebel and militant groups operating in the eastern part of the country. The attacks result in regular loss of life, mass displacements, and increased instability.
