MONUSCO mission was deployed in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2010. Its goal is to help the Congolese government's efforts to stabilize the region, but it has faced violent protests in recent years amid concerns that it has not done enough to stop the bloodshed.
The head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said its personnel and vehicles were attacked in the capital, Kinshasa, on Saturday.

"I strongly condemn the series of attacks targeting MONUSCO personnel in Kinshasa this Saturday, February 10. Several of our vehicles were set on fire. Weakening MONUSCO means strengthening the negative forces that it is fighting with its Congolese partners […]," MONUSCO head Bintou Keita said on X.

The embassy of Côte d'Ivoire also reported that one of its vehicles was "seriously vandalized" in Kinshasa. They described the attacks on vehicles owned by embassies and foreign organizations as indiscriminate and urged its citizens to be cautious.
Security in the eastern part of the country has been a major concern for the DRC in recent years due to a widespread armed anti-government campaign by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels.
The frequency of confrontations between the rebels, military forces, and pro-army self-defense organizations has intensified in recent weeks. As a result, more than 135,000 people have been forced to seek refuge in areas surrounding the city of Goma in North Kivu province in the eastern part of the nation that are believed to offer more security, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said on Thursday.

"This situation will likely compromise food security and economic activities in Goma and surrounding areas. The city of Goma is at risk of isolation from the other territories of North Kivu," OCHA stated.

The situation in the country is also aggravated by recent floods that have claimed dozens of lives, according to reports.
Last December, the UN Security Council decided to extend MONUSCO's mandate until December 20, 2024. In a resolution, the UN executive body also decided to initiate the mission's "gradual, responsible, sustainable withdrawal" from the country and to gradually transfer its responsibilities to the Congolese authorities.
In January, the Southern African Development Community announced that it had deployed a Mission to the DRC (SAMIDRC) to assist the Congolese government in restoring peace and security in the eastern part of the country.
