MOSCOW (Sputnik) - With the addition of new members, the BRICS has grown to 10 countries with a population of 3.6 billion - nearly half the world's population. The countries account for more than 40% of global oil production and about a quarter of global merchandise exports.
Russia will support Cuba’s interest in expanding cooperation with the BRICS counties, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
"We have noted the continued and even growing interest of Cuban friends in cooperation with BRICS. Russia, as the country chairing this association this year, will support this stance. I am confident that other members … will also take a positive view of Cuba's application for BRICS status," Lavrov told a press conference in Cuba.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel attended the BRICS Summit in South Africa for the first time in the summer of 2023, where he took part in top-level dialogues.
