Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Cameroon were established on February 20, 1964, and Cameroon officially recognized Russia as the successor state of the former USSR on January 14, 1992.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Cameroonian counterpart Lejeune Mbella Mbella exchanged congratulatory telegrams on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry noted that the foreign ministers emphasized the "traditionally friendly nature" of bilateral relations.
The ministers also confirmed their countries' willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
"The parties reaffirmed the mutual intention of Moscow and Yaoundé to strengthen the entire spectrum of Russian-Cameroonian cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries and stressed the importance of further coordination of joint efforts in the international arena in the interests of peace and security on the African continent," the statement said.

Cameroonian President Paul Biya attended the Second Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg last summer, where he met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
At the time, Putin noted that ties between Russia and Cameroon are being built in a spirit of mutual respect and partnership.
"The approaches of Russia and Cameroon to international problems are similar: we advocate a polycentric model of world order based on the principles of the rule of law, non-acceptance of dictate and inadmissibility of double standards in world affairs," the president then said.
