Tbilisi Detains Cargo With Six Explosives Bound From Odessa to Voronezh for Terrorist Attack
15:50 05.02.2024 (Updated: 16:13 05.02.2024) TBILISI (Sputnik) - Georgia has detained a minibus with six explosive devices that was heading from Odessa to Voronezh in order to carry out a terrorist attack, the State Security Service of Georgia said on Monday.
"As a result of a search by employees of the anti-terrorism center of a specific vehicle, two units of batteries intended for an electric vehicle were seized. The batteries contained a total of six special explosive devices," the security service told reporters.
The explosive devices contained military-grade C-4 plastic explosive, which could be activated using an electric detonator and a special timer. The total weight of the explosive
reaches 14 kilograms (30.9 pounds).
"On January 19, these explosive devices and substances were imported from the city of Odessa (Ukraine) through Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey to Georgia through the Sarfi checkpoint in a minibus owned by a Ukrainian citizen. The cargo was planned to be transported to Russia, namely to the city of Voronezh, through the Daryal checkpoint," the security service said.
Citizens of Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia were involved in the process of attempting to transport explosive devices from
Ukraine to Russia through the Georgian territory, according to the security service.
"According to the case materials, the mentioned process was organized by a citizen of Ukraine, a candidate for lawmaker of the Kiev district of the local Rada of the Odessa region in 2020 from the Servant of the People party, Andrew Sharashidze, originally from the city of Batumi. The specified person actively monitored the movement of the above-mentioned explosive devices," the service added.
