MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Geingob has been president of the southern African country since 2015, having previously chaired the body that drafted Namibia's post-independence constitution and served as the country's first prime minister.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday sent condolences to the acting head of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, on the death of Namibian President Hage Geingob, praising the latter's contribution to the development of friendly relations between the two nations.
Earlier in the day, the Namibian president died in hospital where he was receiving cancer treatment, Mbumba said.
"Dear Mr. Mbumba, please accept my deep condolences on the death of President of the Republic of Namibia Hage Geingob. The establishment of the Namibian statehood and many important events in the modern history of your country are associated with the name of Hage Geingob … It is also difficult to overestimate his personal contribution to the development of friendly relations between Namibia and Russia," Putin said in a letter published on the Kremlin's website.
