Namibian President Hage Geingob, who had been found to have cancer cells, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 at a hospital where he was being treated, acting Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba said. Mbumba added that "the Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house." The Namibian cabinet "will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements" in connection with the passing away of Geingob. In early January, the presidency said Geingob had been found to have cancer cells by his medical team following biopsy exams and that he would undergo treatment. The presidency then added that Geingob, with presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in late 2024, would continue to carry out his duties as the president and the chairperson of the country's cabinet. In mid-January, the presidency announced that Geingob would travel to the United States for a two-day novel treatment for cancer and later announced that the president returned to Namibia on January 31.
