Senegal's President Macky Sall announced on Saturday that he had revoked the decree convening the electoral council on February 25, which means that the presidential election will not be held on that date.
"I have signed a decree [...] repealing [the one] convening the electoral council. For my part, my solemn commitment not to run in the presidential election remains unchanged," the president said.
Sall pledged to launch an open national dialogue
to create the conditions for "free, transparent and inclusive elections" in the West African nation.
The president's signing of the decree
came amid a legislative investigation of two Constitutional Council judges whose integrity in the election process has been questioned.
President Sall's decision to postpone the presidential election is the first of its kind in Senegal's history. A new date for the election has not yet been announced.
