For more than a decade, Nigeria has been facing significant security challenges, such as terrorism, banditry, and theft of crude oil.
Assailants invaded the palace of the traditional ruler Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole in the southwestern state of Kwara on Thursday, where they murdered him and abducted his wife and another individual, the media reported.

"It is with deep sorrow that I confirm the unfortunate incident that unfolded today in Koro, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. Gunmen invaded the palace of the Onikoro, Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole, resulting in the tragic loss of his life and the abduction of his wife and one other," the police spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, reportedly said.

However, some reports claimed that besides the wife, two other people were kidnapped, whose identities were not revealed.
Furthermore, the state police increased security and initiated an investigation, reports said.

"Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act. We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought swiftly to justice," the police said, as cited by the media.

On Monday, two other traditional rulers were fatally shot by unidentified assailants and some school pupils and teachers were kidnapped in the neighboring state of Ekiti, the Nigerian police said on X.

Nigerian State Enlists Civilian Volunteers to Combat Terrorist, Bandit Threats
The northern part of the country also suffers from security problems, particularly from Boko Haram* terrorists. Thus, in order to tackle the issue more effectively, Nigeria mobilized 4,200 civilian volunteers, Governor Dauda Lawan of the northwestern Zamfara state revealed on Wednesday.
The governor stressed that the increase in instability has prompted civilian participation in the anti-terrorism and anti-bandit campaign. He assured that the government would take responsibility for training, equipping and paying the civil guard.
* Boko Haram, or Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), is a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia and many other states.
