Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt Welcome ICJ Decision on Gaza
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt welcomed the orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, their foreign ministries said on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the
ICJ ruled on provisional measures requested by South Africa in its case against Israel over alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip. The court ordered Israel to take urgent measures to prevent acts of genocide and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave. At the same time, the ICJ did not order an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
"The State of Qatar welcomes the interim ruling issued by the... ICJ, especially for Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent all genocidal acts... in its war against the Gaza Strip, considering the ruling to be a victory for humanity, the rule of law and international justice," the ministry said in a statement.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry, for its part, said it was necessary to take further measures to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, protect the Palestinian population of the enclave and hold the Israeli armed forces accountable for alleged violations of international humanitarian law.
Cairo also welcomed the ICJ's decision to protect Palestinians, noting, however, that it expected the court to order an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as well. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry demanded that Israel comply with the measures set out in the court's decision.
Spain joined the Arab countries in expressing satisfaction with the ruling.
"The Government of Spain welcomes the decision of [the ICJ], which ordered several of the interim measures requested by South Africa in relation to the Gaza crisis. Spain calls on all parties to respect and comply with these measures in their entirety," the country's foreign ministry wrote on X.
South Africa filed a lawsuit accusing Israel of genocidal intent in Gaza with the ICJ on December 29 in response to a rising civilian death toll in the besieged Palestinian enclave. It seeks to prove that Israel's military campaign is genocidal in nature and targets Gazans as a part of the broader Palestinian people.
