In July, President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia intended to bolster ties with Burkina Faso by reopening its embassies there. This decision was confirmed in late December, when the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, resumed operations after a break of more than three decades.
Russia intends to develop relations with Burkina Faso and is interested in
building partnerships with all African countries, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"As for our relations with Burkina Faso, we intend to develop them, we are interested in developing these relations, and in all possible areas," Peskov stated.
He noted that this also applies to relations with other African countries that show mutual interest.
"We will consistently continue to work to implement the [...] agreements that were reached at the relatively recent Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg," the spokesman added.
Last month, Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie
Traore, told
Sputnik Africa that he was looking forward to the coming new year with "much hope and expectation" for the future of relations between Ouagadougou and Moscow, as "Russia supports Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism" and is "a truly strategic partner" for the African country.
Aside from help in fighting terrorism, Russia sent a free consignment of
grain to Burkina Faso as part of humanitarian aid that was earlier announced by the Russian President Vladimir
Putin.
Furthermore, Russian Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Alexei Saltykov, underlined that development of relations between Moscow and Ouagadougou in 2024 will be focused on the implementation of the decisions taken by the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Burkinabe interim leader, Ibrahim Traore, during their meeting in July 2023 on the sidelines of the second Russia-Africa Summit.
